the spaces between - Exhibition in Bath Abbey. September 10 to 29 2010, with specially composed music at the evening service on Sunday September 26.
A exploration of what it means to be living in the spaces between earth and heaven. Living, that is, in the world of time and space, engaging fully in the present moment, while holding a spiritual vision of heaven, and an awareness that in every part of the material world the Spirit of God is with us.
As a full time priest in the Church of England, artist Judith Roberts frequently speak the words, ‘The Lord is here'. In making these pictures she wanted to explore visually, freed of verbal constraints and dogmas, what it might mean in colour and shape to speak of the presence of the Spirit of God in various aspects of human experience.
She hopes that the pictures will be accessible for anybody, of Christian faith or not, as we all live within the spaces between the known, the now, the not-yet and the unknown.
The pictures are constructed from torn paper collage and acrylic paint applied in a number of ways. They are colourful, sizeable (max 6’ x4’) and expressive of the surprising movement and energy of the Spirit at work. They also express some of the struggle to hold a position of faith, and they refer to some of the key moments of the life of Jesus as he entered into what it means to be human.
The Exhibition includes a service, with music composed for the occasion by Charles West, on Sunday September 26 at 6.30pm.
Charles’s music is a striking interpretation of six of the pictures, full of its own rich energy and colour. It will be performed by the Beare Trio (piano, clarinet and cello), all professional Devon musicians.
The exhibition will be open from 9 am to 6pm every day, although sometimes closed for services. To check opening times, please phone 01225 422462.
