Rural Life
Here in Somerset we are surrounded by beautiful countryside; Exmoor, the Quantocks and the Mendip Hills are on our doorstep. Whilst this provides a haven for holidays and recreation, those who live and work in rural communities have to face unique issues and challenges. We place a high priority on supporting the many facets of country living through the work of the Rural Life Group.
Our commitment to helping change lives, churches and communities in a rural environment is expressed in various ways. We seek to offer support, advice and training for all who work and live in the countryside, but are particularly a resource for those involved in agriculture, as well as churches and their leaders.
Support
In today's financial and political climate, we understand how difficult it can be for those in agricultural employment and offer a listening ear as well as practical advice. The Rural Life Advisor is available for consultations and we have strong links with agencies such as the Farm Crisis Network and Somerset Community Foundation who are there to help.
Rural life for parishes and clergy is also very different from their urban counterparts so we aim to be a support and resource for Christian communities in the countryside. Our Clergy in Rural Ministry Group plays a key role here.
Training
We offer training to support ministers with the specific challenges of rural ministry. We offer two different rural-focused training days as part of the diocese's Continuing Ministerial Development programme. We also have strong links with other relevant training providers, such as the Arthur Rank Centre,
Rural Chaplains
Part of our focus is the work of the two chaplains at the main livestock markets in the county. Robert Widdowson at Frome and Chris Keys at the Sedgmoor Business Centre offer advice and support for all present at the busy markets. They are a listening ear and a point of contact with the Christian faith.
